With so much going on in Los Angeles area, we had no idea what to expect from San Diego’s Abstract Festival – the second coming of RESET’s electronic massive event located at the San Diego’s Sports Arena. Even though we did extensive coverage last year at San Diego Street Scene ’09, we still didn’t know what to expect – bunch of fist-pumping maniacs? Victoria Secret lingerie dance party? Reserved IDM headnodders? Neon-clad electroclashers in played-out shutter shades/wayfarers? Well the answer was all of above… and more. Not to mention a surprisingly satisfying musical lineup.

Rusko shows San Diego how to move. Rusko’s live performance at Audiotistic ’10 made me a believer of dupstep and couldn’t miss out on his visit to SD. We were just amazed how Rusko can maintain high octane energy from start to finish with no errors and at the same time showing us his fancy dance moves. Despite the crowds’ varied appearances, the crowd became one mass of waving arms with each throbbing baseline and electro beep. <3

The biggest surprise of the festival came in the form of a Major Lazer performance. Jumping up on the Dj Booth and working the crowd with some mind blowing tracks that made everyone lose control, the infamous Diplo and his crew reminded us why they came. They came for one reason only, to blast us into the stone age. It was loud, loud, and loud and the crowd went apeshit! I’m saying this now: I DON’T KNOW HOW ANYONE IS GOING TO TOP MAJOR LAZER’S PERFORMANCE. Between the raunchy acrobatics (Daggering) and the crazy electro/funk-hop/dancehall beats that poured out of Diplo’s equipment, I just don’t see how anyone’s going to do it. Success in the arena would means hitting the mandatory minimums – like provoking crazy dancing from the crowd or having a frontman that climbs onto a 15-foot high ladder and jumps down to pon the floor with an awaiting female down below. If another does this, I’d be surprised, but thrilled, as that means I’ll have another show to add to my all time favorite show list because that is exactly where last night’s Major Lazer showcase belongs.

We finished out the evening with an absolutely killer set from the always intense, always rock-solid Designer Drugs. We were promised that the duo would both be present but only ½ of DD, Michael, made an appearance. It was 3 A.M. and sure, we were drinking for the past 6 hours and was like 1,000 cigarettes closer to death, but there was no way we were going miss Designer Drugs. Even with just ½ of the duo, the crowd seemed to love it all. DD’s set began with a roaring crowd and ended the same exact way. Overall, an awesome event which delivered and with the SD club scene just a short train/car ride away from LA, we’ll be sure to make regular appearances in the city in the near future. Special thanks to Linzi and all the good folks at Reset for an unforgettable night!

Great event with happy endings.
