Le New Shit was first exposed to The Creators Project at Coachella 2011. As Coachella’s first ever creative partner, they’ve brought together artists, filmmakers, musicians and designers from across the world to construct art installations on Coachella grounds and redesigned Coachella’s main stage. We think they’ve made the Coachella experience richer and have been curious about them ever since.

On Saturday, October 15th, 2011 we were invited to the unforgettable technology and art festival in DUMBO, Brooklyn. The festival featured art for all of our senses: local food vendors, art installations, impressive performances and film screenings.

Stretched across 4 blocks between the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan Bridge the beautiful setting was only fitting for this art filled event.

The Tobacco Stage was a brick warehouse with beautiful framed views of the city across the water through its opened archways. One side housed the gigantic responsive-LED cubed structure called Origin.  Debuted by United Visual Artists (UVA), it intrigued bystanders like flies to a bug lamp. On the other side we watched throughout the day as John Maus, who put on an interesting show, beating himself up (and it looks like it hurts).  Yuksek, his live band rocked the crowd with their female drummer.  Company Flow pushed out a sound that was reminiscent of a mix between old school hip hop and drum and bass.  Hipster god Atlas Sound had the audience swaying by strumming, singing and drinking. The anticipation of the night was the triumphant return of Justice who was to play their first NYC DJ set in two years. Even though Justice’s performance was unfortunately cut short by stupid complaining neighbors, they did not fail to show their love for the fans by delivering a high energy set. The French duo, Gaspard and Xavier, was welcomed by the crowd chanting “New York Loves Justice” as they opened with more than just a toe tapping beat. Armed with cigarettes, vodka and leather jackets (of course), they warmed up the crowd when they played some of the songs off their newest album but the crowd went bat-shit crazy when Audio, Video, Disco came on.

On the Archway Stage, Florence and the Machine’s performance can only be described as simply beautiful. Set under the Manhattan Bridge, inside a tunnel with hazy violet lighting, the acoustics bounced off of the curved walls, vibrating the cobble stone road as Florence’s voice and the melodic sound of the harp sent chills up our spines.

There were dozens of other live performers, including Four Tet, Girl Unit, A$AP Rocky and Clams Casino, Teen Daze and Nic Thorburn from Islands and The Golden Filter to name a few. The Creator’s Project shows will definitely be reoccurring events for us. This particular event was free to the public with RSVP and if you spot them somewhere in your area, take a day (or two) and soak in all the art and music that The Creators Project brings to you.
